Christmas Cookies

Every family has their holiday traditional foods. Growing up we always knew it was Christmas when my mom made sugar cookies using Christmas cookie cutters and topped with sprinkles. The recipe she used wasn’t handed down from her mom or grandma, or even found in one of those fancy magazines featuring all kinds of weird and wonderful 70s type recipes. No, our holiday cookies came straight from the most famous cookie connoisseur in the word – Sesame Street’s own, Cookie Monster.

In a shelf crammed full of cook books of all types, there were two that my brother and I loved: The Superhero’s Cook Book, and the Sesame Street Cookbook. The best recipe in that book was of course Cookie Monster’s Famous Cookie Dough.

This book was written in 1978, and of course being the 70s, my mom changed up the recipe a bit to make it healthier and replace part of the white flour with whole wheat but I’ve reverted back to just 100% white flour (it is of course possible that the original recipe did have the white/whole wheat mix – I’ll have to look for the book next time I visit my parents!) The recipe has been transcribed over the years and shared among family members and now it’s time to share it with you!

Cookie Monster Famous Cookie Dough

Recipe:

  • 3/4 cup margarine or butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 2.5 cups of flour (or 2¼ cup of flour and ¼ whole wheat)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp baking powder

Cream butter and sugar. Add in the eggs and vanilla. Add in the flour, salt and baking powder. Once everything is combined chill for at least an hour. When you are ready to bake, Preheat the oven to 400℉. Roll out on a lightly floured surface and cut out using your favourite cookie cutter shapes. Decorate with sprinkles (if using) before putting in the oven. Bake for 6 to 8 minutes.
